ADM Nuclear Technologies – Suppliers of Radiation Shielding Materials
There are many industrial, commercial and medical applications, where radiation sources are used. For example, we are all familiar with X-ray machines at airports and hospitals.
Radioactive materials are also present in the natural environment and measures need to be taken to ensure that they do not pose a risk to anyone’s health. For example, Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) can be present at mine sites and mineral processing plants.
Regardless of the source, measures need to be taken to minimise exposure to radiation.
Two methods are usually deployed.
The first is the use of radiation detection equipment to monitor the level of radiation in a given area, or radiation dosimeters to record the level of radiation of exposure a person is subjected to.
Many of our readers will already be familiar with ADM Nuclear Technologies wide range of radiation detection and monitoring solutions.
The second method is to install shielding to reduce the level of radiation.
What is probably not so well understood is that ADM also supplies radiation shielding materials for both neutron and gamma radiation.
The product range we offer includes:

Flexible Boron Sheet is used in Australia for a number of different applications.
This is a lightweight synthetic polymer based material containing varying concentrations of Boron, ranging from 5% to 52%. It is flexible, heat resistant and ozone resistant.
The attenuation for 1.8A neutrons for 3.3mm thick sheet varies from 3 to 2800 depending on boron content.
Boron has a very high macroscopic cross-section for thermal neutrons. Therefore, the material has an extremely good attenuation factor for thermal neutrons. Hence, its excellent shielding properties.
Flexible Boron Sheet offers you the following advantages:
- Easy to Cut and Shape
- Easy to Roll & Install
- Flexible
These properties make it easy to install in many different applications.
Key features:
- Excellent neutron shielding material
- Can be cut & shaped using an ordinary knife and scissor & can be bent into radius of 0.5” (12.7mm)
- Light weight & stable in vacuum
- Used over wide temperature ranges
- Can be easily handled and installed by non-specialized personnel
- Can be readily applied to concrete or other wall materials using standard mounting technique
- Can be molded & extruded like tubing, bushing, gasket, any cross-section profiles and parts as per your drawings & requirements
